Physical Therapist Management of Individuals Who Swim, Golf, Throw, and Play Softball
Amanda Arnold, PT, DPT, PhD, OCS, SCS
Amanda Arnold, PT, DPT, PhD, OCS, SCS is a sports physical therapist, researcher, and educator. Clinical practice informs her research and drives her teaching, all of which focus on the evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal dysfunction, with emphasis on the upper extremities. Her research agenda centers around: (1) understanding how physical measures, such as anthropometry, flexibility, and muscle strength, impact injury risk and athletic performance in overhead athletes, and (2) examining how population-specific risk factors, such as sport specialization and physical growth and development, impact injury risk and athletic performance in youth and adolescent athletes. As a primary or co-investigator on multiple university- and industry-supported research projects, she has gained valuable clinical, research, and leadership skills. She is currently the primary investigator in a 3-year prospective analysis of seasonal changes in shoulder range of motion and strength in a cohort of collegiate baseball players. She is a member of the American Society of Shoulder and Elbow Therapists and is passionate about expanding and disseminating knowledge surrounding injury prevention, rehabilitation, and sports performance in overhead athletes, particularly at the youth level.Other Courses Featuring This Author

Eric J. Hegedus, PT, DPT, PhD, MHSc had a notable 30-year career as a leader and innovator in physical therapist education and research. He has led or helped lead 3 DPT programs in his career and is a past winner of the APTA’s Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy James A. Gould Teaching Award. As a scholar, he has published more than 90 peer-reviewed articles, 24 abstracts, and 10 book chapters. He has presented his work internationally. Samantha R. Daniel Kline, PT, DPT, SCS
Daniel Kline, PT, DPT, SCS is a lead clinician with ATI Physical Therapy in Greenville, SC. He is an athletic trainer, sports certified specialist, and upper extremity fellowship-trained specialist through ATI PT and the Kansas City Royals. Daniel is the primary mentor and co-lead of the upper extremity section of ATI’s residency and fellowship education, as well one ATI’s continuing education instructors. He has worked in both administrative and clinical excellence roles focusing on improving clinical outcomes for physicians. Prior to ATI PT, he worked as an athletic trainer in the collegiate and high school sports setting, where he implemented arm care and prevention programs. Chelsea Martin, PT, DPT, SCS
Chelsea Martin, PT, DPT, SCS is a clinician with ATI Physical Therapy in Chapel Hill, NC. She completed her sports residency training with ATI Physical Therapy with an emphasis on the shoulder and overhead athlete. Kristen McKnight, PT, DPT graduated from Duquesne University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program in 2021. After receiving her DPT, Dr. McKnight continued in the outpatient setting at Pittsburgh Performance Physical Therapy (Penn Hills, PA) where she treated a variety of clientele including athletes and professional musicians. Kathleen Shaughnessy, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS is the head physical therapist for the NWSL team San Diego Wave FC. Prior to taking the job with Wave FC, she completed her orthopedic residency with Memorial Hermann Ironman Sports Medicine, and her Upper Extremity Fellowship with ATI Physical Therapy in Greenville. Following her fellowship, she taught in ATI’s residency and fellowship programs. During her time with ATI, she specialized in shoulder instability and conducted research on return to sport metrics. Alexis Wright, PT, DPT, PhD, OCS, FAAOMPT is an Associate Professor and serves as the Director of Curriculum Assessment in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Tufts University. Previously, Dr. Wright served as the Assistant Chair in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, High Point University. Dr. Wright is a clinical researcher, educator, and practicing physical therapist whose passions include refining and improving the patient examination and treatment process used in everyday physical therapist practice. Dr. Wright received her BS in Kinesiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2003, a DPT from Duke University in 2006, and a PhD in physical therapy clinical research from the University of Otago, New Zealand in 2010. Dr Wright was recognized as a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT) in 2011 and achieved APTA board certified orthopedic specialization in 2015. Dr. Wright is a frequent research presenter at state, national, and international meetings and a productive author with more than 55 peer-reviewed manuscripts in orthopedic physical therapy. Dr. Wright currently serves as a content expert item writer for the Orthopaedic Specialty Council of the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. Jason Stodelle, MSPT, ATC, OCS
Jason Stodelle, MSPT, ATC, OCS received a bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL in 1999. He then attended physical therapy school at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, where he received a Master of Science in Physical Therapy in 2001. Upon graduating from physical therapy school, he worked in private practice in the Seattle area (2002-2006), then in Southern California (2006-2008). He then completed a post-professional residency in manual physical therapy and completed the criteria to become an Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) in 2008. He is also a certified athletic trainer (ATC). Beginning in 2009, Jason joined the PGA Tour’s sports medicine team as a contracted physical therapist. Year 2023 marks his 15th season as a physical therapist with the PGA Tour. His responsibilities with the PGA Tour include traveling as a physical therapist to work with professional golfers at golf tournaments domestically and around the world. Since 2009, he has covered almost 300 tournaments on the PGA Tour, including the major championships and Presidents Cups, and has treated well over 1000 professional golfers at those events. He has had the honor of working as a physical therapist for International Golf Federation at the men’s and women’s golf events at the last two Summer Olympic Games – Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and Tokyo in 2021. In addition to his work with the PGA Tour, he also treats professional and amateur golfers privately at various golf clubs around Southern California. When he is not on the road, he enjoys working as an orthopedic lab assistant at a local physical therapy school. Jason has also lectured regularly about golf injuries at various academic institutions.
