Surfing, More Than Just Riding a Wave: A Movement System Impairment Syndromes Approach to the Evaluation and Treatment of the Surfing Athlete
Adam Babitts, PT, DPT, OCS
Adam Babitts, PT, DPT, OCS received his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Maryland College Park. He went on to earn his Doctorate of Physical Therapy Degree at Mount St. Mary’s University in Los Angeles in 2013 where he eventually taught as adjunct faculty. He subsequently completed an Orthopaedic Residency from Health Care Partners Physical Therapy (now Optum Physical Therapy) in Torrance, CA. After residency, he completed a movement science fellowship through Washington University in St. Louis and was mentored by Dr. Su Wang who established his foundation for treating surfing-related injuries. He is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) through the American Physical Therapy Board of Specialists. He is currently enrolled at the University of Washington School of Medicine in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine working toward a PhD in Rehabilitation Science. Prior to starting his PhD, he lived in Redondo Beach, CA where he treated patients with injuries from surfing, as well as other recreational and sport activities.

Su Wang, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS, CNC was raised in Ft. Collins, CO and is the founder of Movement Specialists Physical Therapy, PC. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Chinese from Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL) in 2005. She then graduated with her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine (WUSM) in 2008. After graduation, Dr. Wang moved to Orange County, CA to practice as a physical therapist. She has experience in a variety of settings including sports, geriatrics, aquatics, and orthopedics. In 2009 she earned her certification as Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and in 2011 became a board Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist (OCS). Movement Specialists Physical Therapy, PC was established in 2014. To incorporate holistic wellness, Dr. Wang went on to earn her Certification for Nutritional Consultant (CNC) in 2018. Dr. Wang served as a clinical instructor and mentor for the Movement System Impairments (MSI) fellowship program with WUSM. As a competitive swimmer for 14 years and two-time NCAA qualifier in the 200m butterfly, Dr. Su understands how important proper movement is to both the recreational and elite level athlete. In addition to swimming, Su is an avid runner and enjoys running marathons as well as rock climbing as another way to stay active. However, her greatest passion is surfing. She serves Orange County surfers from weekend warriors and recreational surfers to professional surfers and up and coming surfers as young as 8 years old.
