Course Description
In the monograph, the authors integrate the anatomy and biomechanics of the shoulder to a successful paradigm for evaluation and treatment. Their approach covers nonoperative and postoperative conditions. The authors ground the reader in the normal arthrokinematics of the shoulder structures and relate the impact of pathology on each of these anatomical areas. Specific soft tissue disorders covered include capsulolabral pathologies, underlying instability, and adhesive capsulitis; and the musculoskeletal disorders of the rotator cuff and biceps (SLAP lesions). Throughout the monograph, the authors implement an evidence-based approach for the rehabilitation guidelines. Expected outcomes following common surgical procedures of the shoulder are highlighted and interventions are staged according to the healing process during rehabilitation.
This organization makes it easy for the reader to follow the rehabilitation protocols presented. The monograph concludes with 3 interesting case studies. The first case describes a 20-year-old division I collegiate football and shot put athlete as well as a Navy ROTC member who sustained an anterior shoulder dislocation with a spontaneous reduction of his right arm. The second case is a 66-year-old right hand dominant male who sustained a fall on his outstretched right arm after losing his footing on ice while holding the leash of his dog. The last case is an 82-year-old right hand dominant female who sustained a fall that resulted in a humeral head fracture.
